Why do we love this wine?
As Saint-Émilion’s next door neighbour, Castillon offers value that is almost unparalleled in Bordeaux. From the ridge of limestone soil that produces the most sought after wines on the right bank, the ‘Rocheuses’ is a recognition of how magnificent Bordeaux doesn’t have to come with the price tag. This blend is majority merlot (80%), with cabernet franc in support to make a drop that truly sings. If you’re into the details, here they are: seperately fermented parcels in stainless steel, before 12 months ageing in 20% new oak barrels, 40% first use, and 40% second use. Now, let’s crack a bottle? Intense notes of mulberry and blackcurrant, some cured meat, maybe a touch of smoky, toasty oak in there too. Savoury, inky, and more-ish. Our only complaint is that the bottle is finished already.

Robert Parker
Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the nose sings of freshly crushed black cherries, blackberries and mulberries with suggestions of Marmite toast, smoked meats and cast-iron pan plus a waft of cracked black pepper. Full-bodied, the palate delivers bags of ripe, juicy black fruits with a sturdy frame of grainy tannins, finishing with appealing freshness and with plenty of minerals.
