A very Bordeaux blend of cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc and merlot gives this wine effortless shape. Dark purple with a dense palate of spiced cherry and ripe blackcurrant, it's a hard one to resist.

Why do we love this wine?

Thank you Coonawarra, you've done it again. This has some serious ‘wow’ factor, intensely concentrated and phenomenally executed. That's the skill of a great winemaker, namely in this case Sam Brand whose family are as Coonawarra as it gets. A very Bordeaux blend of cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc and merlot gives this wine effortless shape, and a little bit of love in French and American oak for a generous 20 months really elevates this to luscious levels. Dark purple with a dense palate of spiced cherry and ripe blackcurrant, this wine is well balanced with toasted bread and sweet vanilla honey notes.

Offering fabulous fruit purity with elegant complexity, the wine shows blackcurrant, cedar, thyme and floral aromas on the nose. It's equally satisfying on the palate, displaying excellent weight and roundness together with silky texture and fine tannins, making it wonderfully harmonious and lingering. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc & Merlot.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Balance showcases the legendary terra rossa soils of Coonawarra through winemaker Sam Brand's family expertise spanning generations in the region. The Bordeaux-style blend of cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc and merlot creates exceptional structural complexity, while 20 months in French and American oak develops the wine's signature intensity. This combination of terroir, heritage winemaking and careful oak integration has earned it 96 points from Wine Orbit and recognition as one of Australia's premium cabernet blends.

With its full-bodied structure and concentrated tannins, this 2018 vintage is drinking beautifully now but has excellent cellaring potential through 2030-2035. The Bordeaux blend style typically develops greater complexity over 10-15 years, allowing the oak integration to soften while secondary flavours of leather, tobacco and earth emerge. Coonawarra cabernets are renowned for their longevity, and the wine's current balance suggests it will reward patient collectors with even greater depth and elegance.

The wine's rich blackcurrant and spiced cherry flavours make it perfect for red meat dishes, particularly grilled lamb with rosemary or aged beef steaks. The vanilla and toasted bread notes from oak ageing complement dishes with earthy elements like mushroom risotto or roasted root vegetables. For cheese pairings, try aged cheddar or blue cheese - the wine's full body and structured tannins can stand up to strong flavours while the fruit sweetness balances the saltiness.

The 20-month oak regime using both French and American barrels is crucial for developing The Balance's signature character. French oak contributes subtle spice and structural tannins that enhance the wine's natural elegance, while American oak adds the vanilla honey notes and toasted bread flavours mentioned in the tasting notes. This dual-oak approach is a hallmark of premium Australian cabernet production, allowing winemakers to create layers of complexity that complement rather than overwhelm the fruit.

With ratings of 96 points from Wine Orbit and 95 points from Winestate Magazine, The Balance sits among Australia's elite cabernet blends, competing with wines from Margaret River and Barossa Valley. The Coonawarra terroir gives it a distinctive mineral backbone and elegant structure that differs from the power-driven styles of warmer regions. Its Bordeaux blend composition and extended oak ageing place it in the premium category typically reserved for wines costing significantly more, making it exceptional value for collectors seeking cellar-worthy Australian reds.
