Why do we love this wine?

Pierre Naigeon took a step away from high intervention with his 2018 vintage, instead eschewing any additives and minimalising sulphur usage. Not every vintage allows this hands-off approach, but 2018 certainly was one. And it really shows through in the wines. L'Olivier's fruit is quite bright, hinting at red currants and blackberries. The fresh and energetic palate sits in the more medium-bodied range, finishing up with firm yet approachable tannins. You'll find this showing really well now but there's at least a decade left of prime drinking in the bottle.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 2018 vintage allowed Pierre Naigeon to adopt a remarkably hands-off winemaking approach, eschewing additives and minimising sulphur usage. This low-intervention style wasn't possible in every vintage, but 2018's exceptional growing conditions permitted this natural approach. The result is a wine that truly expresses the terroir and grape character without technological interference, showcasing the pure essence of Burgundian Pinot Noir.

This wine is drinking beautifully now but has excellent ageing potential with at least a decade of prime drinking ahead. Burgundian Pinot Noir from quality producers like Naigeon typically develops greater complexity over time, with the bright fruit flavours evolving into more earthy, forest floor characteristics. The firm yet approachable tannin structure provides the backbone necessary for extended cellaring, making this an excellent choice for both immediate enjoyment and long-term investment.

Vielles Vignes translates to 'old vines' in French, indicating that this wine comes from mature grapevines typically over 30-40 years old. Old vines produce lower yields but more concentrated, complex fruit with deeper root systems that access different soil layers and minerals. In Burgundy, old vine Pinot Noir is particularly prized as it delivers greater depth, intensity, and terroir expression - qualities that are clearly evident in this L'Olivier bottling's concentrated blackberry and forest floor characteristics.

Fixin sits at the northern end of the Côte de Nuits and produces wines that bridge the gap between the power of Gevrey-Chambertin and the elegance of more southern appellations. This L'Olivier vineyard expression shows the typical Fixin character - medium-bodied with firm tannins and bright acidity, offering excellent value compared to more famous Burgundy villages. The single vineyard designation elevates it above basic Bourgogne, providing more specific terroir expression and complexity.

The medium-bodied profile and bright acidity make this wine incredibly food-friendly, particularly with classic Burgundian cuisine like coq au vin or duck confit. The blackberry and forest floor notes complement earthy dishes such as mushroom risotto or roasted game birds beautifully. The firm tannin structure can handle richer preparations, while the wine's elegance won't overpower lighter fare like herb-crusted lamb or aged cheeses, making it versatile for both casual and formal dining.
