Why do we love this wine?

You know when something seems to good to be true? That's what we thought of this wine before we tasted it, surpassing all expectations by miles. Macerated plums, fresh vanilla pods, cracked pepper and roasted coffee beans are just some of the layers that you can expect here. Did we mention a robust, silky palate? That's right, this is a wine of very high calibre. Given this winery is all about their heritage estate vineyards, I guess we should never have been surprised at how good this could get.

It's wonderfully fruited and immensely complex, showing dark fruit richness, toasty oak, vanilla, clove and dark cocoa aromas on the nose. The palate is impressively weighted and concentrated with plush texture and velvety tannins. Graceful and enticing with a prolonged delicious finish. At its best: now to 2032.

Another superb Barossa Shiraz – generous, bold, balanced and decadent. Only 25 barrels of this wine were made so do not hesitate as it certainly exceeds the quality of plenty of wines twice the price and more. This is quintessential Barossa Shiraz. Inky dark purple, there are blackberry notes, cloves, new leather and violets, spices and florals. Vanillin oak but there is excellent integration afoot. The palate explodes with chocolate, mocha, aniseed, coffee beans, blackcurrants, cassis and soy. Supple texture, the wine is balanced and generous with boundless energy. Good intensity and a fine line of acidity run the full length of this wine. A lingering finish, it will drink superbly for the next twelve to twenty years.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 2018 vintage showcases the perfect storm of ideal growing conditions and Schild Estate's heritage vineyard expertise. The wine displays remarkable complexity with layers of macerated plums, vanilla pods, cracked pepper and roasted coffee beans, all supported by a robust yet silky palate structure. This level of sophistication typically emerges when old-vine Barossa fruit meets meticulous winemaking, creating a wine that punches well above its price point.

The 2018 vintage is recognised as a 'Killer Vintage' in the Barossa, characterised by excellent ripening conditions that produced wines with exceptional concentration and balance. This particular year allowed Shiraz grapes to develop intense flavour compounds while retaining natural acidity, resulting in wines with both power and elegance. The vintage's success is reflected in the consistently high ratings across multiple Barossa producers.

The wine's rich blackberry and liquorice flavours, combined with its spicy complexity, make it ideal for robust dishes like slow-cooked lamb shanks, grilled ribeye steak, or aged hard cheeses. The roasted coffee bean notes complement barbecued meats beautifully, while the silky tannin structure won't overpower dishes with earthy elements like mushroom risotto. The wine's full body and spice profile also pair excellently with Middle Eastern cuisine featuring cumin and paprika.

Given the wine's full-bodied structure, high-quality fruit source from heritage Barossa vineyards, and exceptional vintage conditions, this Shiraz has excellent cellaring potential of 10-15 years from vintage. The robust tannin framework and concentrated fruit flavours will continue to integrate and develop secondary characteristics like leather, tobacco, and dried herbs. However, it's already drinking beautifully now if you prefer the vibrant primary fruit expression.

'Edel' is German for 'noble' or 'precious', reflecting Schild Estate's German heritage and their commitment to producing premium expressions from their best vineyard blocks. This designation indicates the wine represents a step up from their standard range, showcasing fruit from their most prized sites within the Barossa. The name suggests this is a wine crafted with particular attention to detail, using only the finest grapes to create something truly special.
