Why do we love this wine?

A cellar release with a lucky 9 years of evolution - give it a burl, and you’ll see that it is only starting to touch its prime drinking window. Usually exclusive to the wine producer’s database, this trickles out to us only when we are lucky, somehow our charming wine buyers have managed to get on that lucky list.

Boisterous tannins that have mellowed to a brooding, silky palate, with chunky fruit joined by herbaceous and somewhat meaty notes. There’s still classic cabernet cassis and blackberry, which is accompanied by rosemary, thyme and a long and savoury finish. Be quick, mofo - you too should be so lucky!

Frequently Asked Questions

This cellar release demonstrates how premium Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon transforms with proper bottle ageing. The initially boisterous tannins have evolved into a silky, brooding texture while developing complex secondary flavours like rosemary and thyme alongside the classic cassis and blackberry. At 9 years old, it's entering its prime drinking window where fruit concentration meets savoury complexity.

Coonawarra's famous terra rossa soil over limestone provides perfect drainage and mineral complexity that Cabernet Sauvignon thrives in. The cool maritime climate allows for slow, even ripening that preserves natural acidity while developing intense fruit flavours. This terroir combination creates the structured, age-worthy Cabernets that Coonawarra is renowned for, evident in this wine's ability to develop beautifully over nearly a decade.

The wine's evolved tannin structure and herbaceous, meaty notes make it perfect for rich, savoury dishes. Try it with slow-cooked lamb with rosemary, aged beef steaks, or game meats where the wine's earthy complexity complements the protein's richness. The cedar and spice notes also pair beautifully with mature hard cheeses or dishes featuring herbs like thyme and rosemary.

A 96-point score from Wine Orbit places this wine in exceptional territory, indicating outstanding quality and complexity. This rating reflects the successful marriage of Reschke's winemaking expertise with Coonawarra's premium terroir, plus the additional complexity gained through careful cellaring. Such high scores are typically reserved for wines that show perfect balance, distinctive character, and excellent ageing potential.

While this wine is described as entering its prime drinking window, premium Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon can continue evolving for 15-20 years from vintage. The current balance of fruit intensity with developed savoury complexity suggests it's drinking beautifully now, but could reward patient cellaring with even more tertiary development. Consider your preference for fruit-forward versus more evolved, earthy characteristics when deciding.
