Ok, time for some real talk. Even if there was zero discount on this wine, it’d still be a fantastic buy. But at the price you can get this at, it’s basically a ‘must’. This is straight down the line classic Coonawarra cab, but done really really really well.

Why do we love this wine?

This reads like a 'who's who?' of classic Coonawarra flavours: fresh herbaceous notes, cassis, cedar and violet. A precise graphite core, silky texture and a lingering sweet tobacco finish. You’ll find depth of flavour and powerful fruit juxtaposed with elegant tannins and subtle savoury tones. A swathe of glowing reviews should give you every confidence to top up your cabernet cupboard with this. Delicious.

Frequently Asked Questions

Coonawarra's famous terra rossa soil over limestone creates the perfect conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon, producing wines with distinctive eucalyptus and mint characters alongside rich blackcurrant fruit. The region's cool climate allows for extended ripening, developing complex herbaceous notes and that signature graphite minerality found in this Vitulus. This combination of soil, climate and varietal creates Australia's most celebrated Cabernet Sauvignon style.

Serve this wine at 16-18°C to showcase its silky texture and complex aromatics properly. Decanting for 30-60 minutes will help soften the elegant tannins and allow the cedar, violet and tobacco notes to fully express themselves. The wine's structure and weight make it perfect for pairing with red meat dishes, aged cheeses, or rich mushroom-based meals that can match its intensity.

The 95-point Wine Orbit score and 94-point Wine Showcase rating place this wine in the 'outstanding' category, indicating exceptional quality and complexity. James Halliday's Special Value Award is particularly significant, as it recognises wines that deliver premium quality at accessible prices. These accolades from respected Australian wine critics suggest this Vitulus offers serious wine drinker satisfaction while representing excellent value in the premium Cabernet market.

This full-bodied Coonawarra Cabernet has the structure and tannin backbone to age gracefully for 8-12 years from vintage. The 2020 growing season produced wines with excellent balance between fruit concentration and natural acidity, essential for long-term cellaring. As it matures, expect the primary blackcurrant flavours to evolve into more complex secondary characters, while the cedar and tobacco notes become more pronounced and the tannins further integrate.

The wine's blackcurrant and cocoa notes pair beautifully with grilled lamb or beef, while the mint and herbaceous characters complement herb-crusted meats or Mediterranean dishes. The cedar influence makes it excellent with aged hard cheeses like vintage cheddar or aged gouda. The tobacco finish and full body also work wonderfully with rich, slow-cooked dishes like braised short ribs or hearty game meats where the wine's savoury complexity can shine.
