Why do we love this wine?

Brunello is one of those great wines of the world that ages beautifully. Ten years is about perfect in our estimation, making this 2012. San Polino is the first biodynamic estate in Brunello, and they’re a subscriber to the saying, ‘wine is made in the vineyard’. It shows. We’ve been extremely lucky to have a few of the personality-driven wines from the San Polino vineyards, but we were yet to know luck until this arrived on our doorstep. Reserved only for years when the fruit is deemed exceptional, this wine has only seen production 7 times in the last 2 decades. Sandy loam and volcanic composition nurtures vines for long periods of ripening; while the south facing vineyards at 450m heights encourage prime ripening conditions for complexity and structure. An impressive 4 years in large Slovenian oak gave this wine supreme power to start its (very) long life. James Suckling gave this a lofty 96 point review four years ago. Imagine what it’s drinking like now!

Part of our Women in Wine Collection

We are committed to ALWAYS having wines available that are made by women. In an industry that’s still dominated by men, we believe in celebrating the incredible work women are doing. Here’s to our Women in Wine!

Winemakers: Katia Nussbaum & Gigi Fabbro

San Polino is owned and run by Londoner Katia Nussbaum and Luigi (Gigi) Fabbro from Friuli. San Polino was Montalcino’s first certified organic estate and is now run biodynamically. “We tend to make the wines first and think about how to sell them later,” says Katia. Decanter says: “The wines are joyful. They have depth and power and a wonderfully expressive complexity.”

I love the way the deep, dusty nose opens up as this aerates, revealing very ripe red fruits, and only just a hint of dried fruits. The licorice and dried flowers follow. The huge dry tannins enable this concentrated and elegant wine to easily carry all the power and push the finish out a really long way. Drink or hold.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Riserva represents the pinnacle of San Polino's winemaking, produced only in exceptional years - just 7 times in the past two decades. The extended ageing of 4 years in large Slovenian oak barrels gives it supreme power and longevity beyond standard Brunello. The combination of biodynamic farming practices, volcanic sandy loam soils, and south-facing vineyards at 450m elevation creates extraordinary complexity that James Suckling recognised with 96 points.

Brunello di Montalcino is renowned for its exceptional ageing potential, and ten years is often considered the sweet spot where the wine's power begins to harmonise with developed tertiary flavours. At twelve years old, this 2012 has moved beyond its youthful tannins while retaining the structure and complexity that made it worthy of Riserva status. The extended oak ageing and biodynamic viticulture have given it the foundation for this very long life ahead.

As Montalcino's first certified biodynamic estate, San Polino follows the philosophy that 'wine is made in the vineyard' through holistic farming practices that work with natural rhythms. This approach typically results in wines with greater terroir expression and more vibrant, authentic flavours. The volcanic sandy loam soils are allowed to express themselves fully, contributing to the wine's distinctive personality and the complex interplay of mulberry, plum, and allspice notes.

This husband-and-wife team brings together Katia's London perspective and Gigi's Friulian heritage, creating what Decanter describes as 'joyful' wines with 'wonderfully expressive complexity'. Their philosophy of making wines first and thinking about sales later allows for authentic expression without commercial compromise. Their approach to long ripening periods and patient oak ageing reflects a commitment to quality over quantity, evident in this Riserva's exceptional depth and power.

This powerful Brunello Riserva demands equally substantial fare - think slow-braised Tuscan wild boar, aged Pecorino Toscano, or grilled Chianina beef. The wine's mulberry and plum richness, enhanced by allspice complexity from extended oak ageing, pairs beautifully with game meats, mushroom risottos, and herb-crusted lamb. The volcanic terroir influence and biodynamic viticulture create enough structure to stand up to bold flavours while maintaining the elegance expected from premium Montalcino.
