Why do we love this wine?

You know when something seems to good to be true? That's what we thought of this wine before we tasted it, surpassing all expectations by miles. Macerated plums, fresh vanilla pods, cracked pepper and roasted coffee beans are just some of the layers that you can expect here. Did we mention a robust, silky palate? That's right, this is a wine of very high calibre. Given this winery is all about their heritage estate vineyards, I guess we should never have been surprised at how good this could get.

It's wonderfully fruited and immensely complex, showing dark fruit richness, toasty oak, vanilla, clove and dark cocoa aromas on the nose. The palate is impressively weighted and concentrated with plush texture and velvety tannins. Graceful and enticing with a prolonged delicious finish. At its best: now to 2032.

Another superb Barossa Shiraz – generous, bold, balanced and decadent. Only 25 barrels of this wine were made so do not hesitate as it certainly exceeds the quality of plenty of wines twice the price and more. This is quintessential Barossa Shiraz. Inky dark purple, there are blackberry notes, cloves, new leather and violets, spices and florals. Vanillin oak but there is excellent integration afoot. The palate explodes with chocolate, mocha, aniseed, coffee beans, blackcurrants, cassis and soy. Supple texture, the wine is balanced and generous with boundless energy. Good intensity and a fine line of acidity run the full length of this wine. A lingering finish, it will drink superbly for the next twelve to twenty years.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 2018 vintage in Barossa was particularly outstanding, delivering wines with exceptional concentration and balance. This Edel Shiraz showcases the perfect marriage of that stellar vintage with Schild Estate's heritage vineyard fruit, resulting in remarkable complexity with layers of macerated plums, vanilla, and coffee beans. The combination of ideal growing conditions and old vine fruit has created a wine that critics have recognised with scores of 97 and 96 points respectively.

Barossa's warm continental climate and ancient soils are legendary for producing powerful, age-worthy Shiraz with distinctive spice and fruit intensity. This terroir contributes to the wine's robust, full-bodied structure and the signature cracked pepper notes that Barossa Shiraz is famous for. The region's heritage vineyards, some over 100 years old, provide the concentrated fruit that gives this wine its exceptional depth and the silky palate texture that balances the power.

This wine's rich, spicy profile and robust tannins make it perfect for hearty dishes that can match its intensity. Think slow-cooked lamb with rosemary, grilled ribeye steaks, or rich game meats like venison. The coffee and vanilla notes also complement dishes with earthy mushrooms or barbecued meats with smoky flavours. For cheese pairings, aged cheddar or blue cheese will harmonise beautifully with the wine's spice and fruit concentration.

Premium Barossa Shiraz like this typically peaks between 8-15 years from vintage, meaning this 2018 is entering its optimal drinking window now through 2030. The wine's excellent structure, balanced acidity, and quality tannins suggest it will continue developing complexity for several more years. While delicious now, cellaring will allow the vanilla and spice elements to integrate further, and the robust palate to soften into even greater elegance.

'Edel' is German for 'noble' or 'precious', reflecting Schild Estate's German heritage and this wine's premium positioning in their portfolio. This designation indicates fruit sourced from their finest heritage vineyard blocks, often featuring old vines that naturally produce lower yields but higher concentration. The Edel range represents Schild's commitment to showcasing the very best expression of their estate vineyards, which explains why this wine has achieved such exceptional critical acclaim and surpassed expectations.
