Why do we love this wine?

There’s nothing quite like the smell of new french oak. Except maybe when it’s mingling delightfully with the sweet aromatics of Barossan shiraz. Now that is what we call a classic pairing. The Nitschke Block is one that was planted by the Schwarz family back in the mid 1900’s, in the famed town of Bethany. This vineyard produces deep, intricate wines and that’s before it even touches the winery. With some classy tricks and an infinite level of attention to detail, you’re guaranteed a superpowered, elegant wine that will knock your shoes and socks right off your feet.

From one of the more ‘well travelled’ winemakers, Jason Schwarz’s experience working all over the world - it was his home town of Barossa that he was drawn to in the end. The generational family story growing wine grapes in the region carries into today, when a tight-nit group of growers makes the Schwarz wines unique, and of impeccable quality.

Deep, dark and broodingly inky in the glass. Aromas of blood plum, violets, bouquet garni, blackberry, cola, milk chocolate and vanilla. Full on flavours: satsuma plum, dark cherry, graphite, boysenberry and spice. Dense and dark, powerful fruit, firm, grippy and granular tannins and bright acidity. A mighty wine with power and precision.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Nitschke Block was planted by the Schwarz family in the mid-1900s in Bethany, one of Barossa's most prestigious sub-regions. This old vine vineyard benefits from decades of root development, which allows the vines to access deeper soil layers and produce more concentrated, complex fruit. The combination of Barossa's warm climate, ancient soils, and the vineyard's maturity creates ideal conditions for producing the deep, intricate shiraz that this block is renowned for.

The new French oak adds layers of complexity beyond the vanilla notes, contributing subtle spice, toast, and tannin structure that complements shiraz's natural fruit intensity. French oak is prized for its tight grain and elegant integration, allowing the wine's plum and sour cherry flavours to shine while adding textural depth. The oak treatment enhances the wine's ageing potential and creates that distinctive aromatic marriage between wood and fruit that defines premium Barossa shiraz.

This style indicates the wine has substantial mouthfeel with layers of flavour that unfold on the palate, rather than being simply fruit-forward. The savoury elements likely include earthy undertones, pepper spice, and perhaps hints of herbs or leather that balance the sweet fruit characteristics. This textural complexity comes from the old vines, careful winemaking, and the interplay between fruit concentration and oak influence, creating a wine that's both powerful and refined.

Jason's global winemaking experience brings diverse techniques and perspectives to traditional Barossa shiraz production, allowing him to apply international best practices while respecting regional character. His travels likely exposed him to different fermentation methods, oak regimes, and blending philosophies that he can adapt to enhance the Nitschke Block fruit. This combination of worldly knowledge and deep local understanding, plus his family's generational connection to the land, creates wines that are both authentically Barossan and internationally sophisticated.

The 2020 vintage earned a 'Killer Vintage' rating, indicating exceptional growing conditions that produced fruit of outstanding quality and concentration. In Barossa, great vintages typically feature ideal weather patterns that allow slow, even ripening, resulting in wines with perfect balance between power and elegance. This vintage quality means the Nitschke Block shiraz will showcase the vineyard's terroir at its finest, with enhanced ageing potential and the ability to develop greater complexity over time.
