There's a reason this has become THE mofo fave shiraz: it’s powerful and opulent, but maintains a certain grace that keeps everything in balance. It doesn't get much better.

Why do we love this wine?

A monster Shiraz that typifies Australian drinking. This is the style of vino that made the world take notice of this ripper region. This Barossa shiraz speaks of the powerful Barossa terroir and the master crafter who made it (can you say, ex-head winemaker at Yalumba?) There’s no surprises here with the flavour profile; an expression of blackberry, plum, chocolate, spices and cedar from the use of 30% new French oak. After four years cellaring time, it’s drinking beautifully now, but has another decade of prime left in it for those patient types.

"Captures so much of what is Barossa. It’s typically full-bodied with a generous helping of ripe fruit, syrupy chocolate and dark plummy richness. Delve deeper and coffee grinds and light cedar merge into a heady combination. Superbly crafted palate that is generous and concentrated yet surprisingly supple. Needless to say, you can tuck this one away for some years, but it is mighty good now. 96 Points." - Ray Jordan, Wine Pilot

Frequently Asked Questions

The Reverend Canon Shiraz has earned exceptional scores (94-96 points) because it perfectly captures the essence of premium Barossa winemaking. The combination of old vine fruit, single vineyard sourcing, and expert craftsmanship from an ex-Yalumba head winemaker creates remarkable complexity and depth. The 30% new French oak integration adds sophisticated cedar notes without overwhelming the intense fruit character that defines world-class Australian Shiraz.

This 2020 vintage is already drinking beautifully after four years of careful cellaring, making it perfect for immediate enjoyment. However, the wine's full-bodied structure and quality oak treatment mean it has another decade of prime drinking ahead. The tannin backbone and concentrated fruit will continue evolving, developing more tertiary flavours like leather and earth while maintaining its core blackberry and plum character.

The wine's rich mocha and blood plum flavours make it ideal for hearty red meat dishes like grilled lamb, beef brisket, or aged steaks. The chocolate notes complement dishes with earthy mushrooms or rich sauces, while the spice elements pair beautifully with barbecued meats - a classic Australian combination. The wine's power can also stand up to strong cheeses like aged cheddar or blue cheese.

The Barossa Valley is considered the spiritual home of Australian Shiraz, with its warm climate and ancient soils creating the perfect terroir for this variety. This region houses some of the world's oldest Shiraz vines, many planted by German settlers in the 1840s, which produce incredibly concentrated fruit. The Barossa's reputation for powerful, full-bodied Shiraz like this Reverend Canon helped establish Australia's credibility on the global wine stage.

Old vines typically produce smaller yields but more concentrated, complex fruit because their deep root systems access diverse soil layers and minerals. Single vineyard sourcing means all grapes come from one specific site, allowing the winemaker to express that unique terroir without blending away distinctive characteristics. Together, these factors create wines with greater depth, complexity, and a stronger sense of place - exactly what you'll find in this exceptional Sorby Adams Shiraz.
