Moody, dark, swirling black fruits sit right at the core of this quintessentially Barossan beast. A smattering of red and blue fruits provide freshness and a little lift to what is otherwise Very Serious Business.

Why do we love this wine?

There is no mistaking a St Hallet classic - when it comes to shiraz, and when it comes to Barossa, they don't muck about. The Sacred Ground is an old favourite among the 'big and bold' faithful, and this iteration is no departure from that well earned reputation. Rich, ripe, chocolate, earthy and opulent. Little flecks of cedar and tobacco sit deftly around determined, full throttle fruit density. St Hallet at their best - unashamedly broad and imposing while remaining stylish, complex, and relinquishing no ground when it comes to sophistication.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 2021 vintage has been recognised as a 'Killer Vintage' by critics, reflecting exceptional growing conditions in the Barossa Valley that year. This vintage showcases the perfect balance of concentrated fruit ripeness and structural complexity that defines great Barossa Shiraz. The combination of ideal weather patterns and St Hallett's expert vineyard management has resulted in a wine that exemplifies both power and finesse, earning it outstanding scores of 97 points from Wine Orbit and 95 points from Huon Hooke.

St Hallett's Sacred Ground represents the quintessential 'big and bold' Barossa style that the region is famous for, yet maintains remarkable sophistication. Unlike some heavy-handed regional examples, this wine achieves its full-bodied character through concentrated fruit density rather than excessive extraction. The integration of cedar and tobacco notes with chocolate and earthy elements demonstrates the complexity that separates premium Barossa Shiraz from simpler fruit-driven styles, making it a benchmark example of what the region can achieve.

The wine's rich, opulent character and spice-driven profile make it an ideal match for robust red meats, particularly grilled lamb with rosemary or slow-cooked beef dishes. The chocolate and earthy undertones complement game meats beautifully, while the tobacco and cedar notes enhance barbecued steaks or aged cheeses. Its full-throttle fruit density can stand up to bold flavours like pepper-crusted venison or rich mushroom-based dishes, making it versatile for hearty winter dining.

St Hallett has achieved Five Red Star Halliday Winery status and is recognised as an Iconic Producer, reflecting decades of consistent excellence in Barossa winemaking. Their reputation stems from an uncompromising approach to Shiraz production that balances traditional Barossa power with modern winemaking precision. The winery's deep understanding of their vineyard sites and commitment to expressing the true character of Barossa terroir has established them as one of the region's most respected names, consistently producing wines that showcase both regional typicity and individual distinction.

Serve this Shiraz at 16-18°C in large Bordeaux-style glasses to allow the complex aromatics of blackberry, plum, and spice to fully develop. While approachable now, the wine's structure and concentration suggest it will continue evolving beautifully over the next 8-12 years, developing additional tertiary complexity. Decanting for 30-60 minutes before serving will help integrate the robust tannins and allow the cedar and tobacco notes to emerge more prominently, enhancing the overall drinking experience.
