When a Barossa shiraz comes from the hands of Dan Standish you can guarantee quality like you can guarantee the sun will rise tomorrow. And his 2021 'The Standish' is an absolute bench-setter. Delightfully bodacious, bold, creamy, and brimming with spice and dark red fruits - it's a drop that will have you dreaming about it long after the last sip.

Why do we love this wine?

Wine Advocated doled out 96pts to this showstopping shiraz and named it a triumph. The Wine Front plated up 93pts and raved about its impact. And down at the Mofo den we're inclined to agree - but we'll go one further. This Dan Standish drop is the stuff Barossa shiraz dreams are made of. It's full bodied, bursting with dark red fruits that are underpinned by creamy oak, and it's finer than your nan's bone china tea set. The depth of this 2021 drop is a testament to the nation's most iconic shiraz region and one of it's most iconic winemakers.

Frequently Asked Questions

The exceptional scoring reflects Dan Standish's mastery in capturing the essence of premium Barossa terroir. The wine demonstrates remarkable balance between power and finesse, with concentrated dark red fruits seamlessly integrated with creamy oak. This level of critical acclaim from two of the world's most respected wine critics indicates a wine that will age gracefully for decades, developing additional complexity while maintaining its core structure.

The Barossa Valley's ancient soils and warm continental climate create ideal conditions for producing intensely flavoured, full-bodied Shiraz with exceptional depth. The region's low rainfall and old vine plantings contribute to concentrated fruit flavours, while the diurnal temperature variation helps retain natural acidity. This terroir expression is what separates premium Barossa Shiraz from other Australian regions, creating wines with both power and elegance.

The wine's rich cocoa and liquorice notes make it an excellent match for char-grilled red meats, particularly lamb with rosemary or beef with dark berry reductions. The full-bodied structure can handle robust flavours like aged hard cheeses, dark chocolate desserts, or Mediterranean dishes with herbs and olives. The creamy oak integration also pairs beautifully with mushroom-based dishes or slow-cooked stews.

While delicious now, this premium Barossa Shiraz will continue developing complexity for 15-20 years under proper cellar conditions. The wine's excellent structure and critical acclaim suggest it will hit its peak drinking window around 2028-2035, when the tannins fully integrate and secondary flavours emerge. Store it at 12-15°C in a dark environment, and consider decanting for 1-2 hours before serving to fully appreciate its evolution.

Dan Standish has earned recognition for his meticulous approach to single-vineyard expressions and his ability to craft wines that honour traditional Barossa winemaking while embracing modern techniques. His focus on low-yielding, old-vine fruit and minimal intervention winemaking produces Shiraz that captures the authentic character of specific sites. The consistent high ratings across multiple vintages demonstrate his skill in creating wines that reflect both the vintage conditions and the unique terroir of his vineyard sources.
