Why do we love this wine?

If you love cabernet based blends, you must go for this absolute cracker from Hawke’s Bay. Trinity Hill is really bringing out the goods with this one! - John, Head of Buying

The famed Gimblett Gravels wine growing area, a small subregion of Hawke’s Bay, is defined by a very unique stony soil type. The stony soil provides a sturdy mineral base to build on. This wine is built amazingly well with dark and brooding plum and berry fruit luring you in, abundant tannin that interplays with acid for a great texture and a solid structure that suggests serious ageing capability. Sixteen months in 35% new French oak has added power to the wine, interweaving with the vibrant, dark fruit and adding a depth and grip to the palate.

James Suckling says “the palate is an elegantly crafted amalgam of fine, long tannins and smooth, supple dark-fruit flesh. Blackberry and dark-cherry flavours run long here”. We couldn’t agree more about this elegantly crafted, wonderful wine.

Absolutely beautiful. Effortless glide, satiny texture, loads of concentrated dark berry fruits, sage and rosemary herbal characters, succulent, fine, al dente tannins and licks of malty richness. Long, so long, spreads beautifully and hugs every corner of the palate. A real experience. Memorable wine.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Gimblett Gravels subregion features unique stony soils that provide exceptional drainage and heat retention, creating ideal conditions for cabernet-based wines. These gravelly soils force vine roots to dig deep, concentrating flavours and creating the mineral backbone that gives this wine its distinctive character. The stones also reflect heat back to the vines during the day and retain warmth at night, ensuring optimal ripening of the cabernet grapes.

With its solid tannin structure and 16 months of French oak maturation, this cabernet blend has excellent ageing potential of 10-15 years from vintage. The wine's abundant tannins will gradually soften and integrate, while the dark fruit flavours will develop greater complexity and tertiary characteristics. Store it in a cool, dark place at consistent temperature to allow the wine to evolve gracefully over time.

The wine's textured, savoury profile and cedar-spice notes make it perfect for grilled red meats, particularly lamb with rosemary or beef with herb crusts. The blackberry fruit and allspice characteristics also complement game dishes, aged hard cheeses, and mushroom-based preparations. The wine's structured tannins can handle rich, protein-heavy dishes while its medium body won't overpower more delicate preparations.

The consistent 95-96 point scores from multiple respected critics reflect the wine's exceptional balance and craftsmanship. Critics particularly praise the elegant integration of fine tannins with supple dark fruit, creating what James Suckling calls 'an elegantly crafted amalgam'. The wine demonstrates Trinity Hill's mastery of the Gimblett Gravels terroir, producing a cabernet blend that showcases both power and finesse in equal measure.

Yes, decanting for 1-2 hours will significantly enhance your experience with this structured cabernet blend. The decanting process allows the wine's abundant tannins to soften and the complex aromatics to fully express themselves. Given the wine's 16 months in French oak and its brooding character, aeration helps unlock the interplay between the dark fruit, mineral elements, and oak integration that makes this wine so compelling.
