Wirra Wirra Vintage Bell Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

You'll want to clear your evening for this outstanding 2017 release. Pouring a deep, inky crimson, it immediately offers up a gorgeous bouquet of cassis, dark plum and that classic regional hint of dark chocolate and fresh mint. Because it has enjoyed plenty of time to mature in the bottle, the palate is wonderfully seamless and integrated. You'll taste a generous core of blackcurrant and subtle cedar box, all perfectly supported by fine-grained tannins that lead into a remarkably long, savoury finish. It's an absolute joy to drink right now, showing exactly why perfectly aged Cabernet is so highly prized.

Why do we love this wine?
The ringing of the heavy bell at Wirra Wirra is a beloved local tradition, loudly signalling the start and end of every vintage. It's a fitting namesake for this monumental Cabernet Sauvignon, which firmly commands attention from the very first sip. While McLaren Vale is perhaps most famous for Shiraz, the region produces truly exceptional Cabernet when the vines are planted in the right locations. Benefiting from the cool maritime breezes blowing off the Gulf St Vincent, the grapes enjoy a moderated ripening season that locks in vital natural acidity. The 2017 growing year was notably cooler than average, allowing the winemaking team to craft a wine of incredible poise and elegance rather than sheer brute force. By carefully maturing the parcel in premium oak, they've produced a distinguished, terroir-driven red that beautifully honours one of Australia's most historic estates.
