There's a reason Wolf Blass are so popular... After a well-planned stint in the cellar, this wine is sitting at a beautiful stage of its life - full of those delicious rich fruits, pepper, spice and chocolate, all slowly developing more decadence with each day of bottle age under cork. Old-school, traditional, mind-blowing.

Why do we love this wine?

It is no secret that we are big fans of McLaren Vale shiraz, so forgive us if we wax a little lyrical here and show a little bias. The grey label shiraz is an absolute stunner and exactly what we want when indulging in a shiraz from the 'Vale - plushness, with power, with richness, and at six years of age it is entering a beautiful drinking window. A window that you can be happy to pop open at your next family bbq, the in-laws will mark you down as their favourite, Dad will be nudging you every 20 mins for a top up, Mum will be telling everyone how thoughtful you are. Now, your siblings might be a little jealous, but you, you will be chuffed. Chuffed with your purchase and the other five bottles you've got stashed away.

Frequently Asked Questions

McLaren Vale's Mediterranean climate and diverse soils create perfect conditions for Shiraz, producing wines with the characteristic plushness and power found in this Grey Label. The region's warm days and cool sea breezes from the nearby coast help maintain acidity while allowing full flavour development. This terroir expression is why McLaren Vale Shiraz consistently delivers the rich, full-bodied style that wine enthusiasts seek.

At six years of age, this 2016 Shiraz has reached an optimal drinking window where the initial fruit intensity has evolved into more complex flavours. The tannins have softened considerably, creating the plush mouthfeel described, while the wine retains its structural integrity. This maturation period allows the blackberry, cherry, and mulberry notes to integrate beautifully with any oak influences.

The Grey Label sits in Wolf Blass's premium tier, representing their commitment to showcasing specific regional characteristics rather than blended styles. This single-region McLaren Vale expression demonstrates more focused terroir than their multi-regional blends, while the Gold medal from Royal Melbourne Wine Show confirms its exceptional quality within this prestigious range.

This rich, powerful Shiraz excels with robust flavours that can match its intensity - think barbecued red meats, lamb with rosemary, or aged hard cheeses. The wine's full body and dark fruit profile also complement hearty stews and grilled vegetables with Mediterranean herbs. Its approachable style makes it perfect for casual gatherings while sophisticated enough for special occasions.

Store bottles horizontally in a cool, dark place around 12-15°C to preserve the wine's quality over time. Serve at 16-18°C to allow the full-bodied character and complex fruit flavours to express themselves properly - too warm and the alcohol becomes prominent, too cool and the rich texture is muted. Decanting for 30 minutes before serving will enhance the aromatic profile.
