This is Barossa shiraz with a refined edge. It’s generous and expressive from the first pour, with lifted florals, red berries, cracked black pepper and spice flowing through the aromatics and into the palate - juicy raspberry and forest fruits supported by clove, graphite and a touch of violet. Z Wines are making outstanding shiraz for fun these days...

Why do we love this wine?

Five generations of one family have tended this vineyard in Lyndoch in the Barossa. That’s pretty damn impressive. We’re talking near on 170 years. This meticulously cared-for wine sees two years in a mix of French and American oak, providing a cedary touch and tannins to with the sheer intensity of the fruit. The mulberry and plum is supported by liquorice, chocolate, violet and pepper, making for a complex and rich Barossa shiraz that could happily handle a few years in the cellar if you were so inclined.

" The Section 3146 title here honours the original southern Barossa property of the Zerk family, settled five generations ago and still under familial custodianship. Shiraz is undoubtedly the hero regional variety that can tell that story, speaking with a hearty mix of sweet plum and raspberry, crumbly soil and crushed kitchen herbs, bay leaf and ground pepper. Earth, fruit and spice - all the rustic regional pleasure in one glass, fleshy, chewy, sticky with a lip-smack of fresh, crimson berries in the finish. A wine that speaks truly of its home." - Tony Love

Frequently Asked Questions

This Lyndoch vineyard has been tended by the same family for five generations - nearly 170 years of continuous care. Such generational stewardship creates deep understanding of the terroir and allows for meticulous vineyard management practices that are passed down through decades. The 'Old Vine' rating reflects how these mature vines produce more concentrated, complex fruit with deeper root systems that access unique mineral profiles in the Barossa soil.

The two-year maturation in a combination of French and American oak barrels creates a sophisticated flavour profile beyond the listed vanilla notes. French oak contributes elegant tannin structure and subtle spice complexity, while American oak adds the cedary characteristics and vanilla sweetness. This extended oak aging allows the intense Barossa fruit to integrate beautifully with the wood, creating the full-bodied palate weight and cellar-worthy structure.

The full-bodied nature and complex flavour profile of mulberry, plum, liquorice, and chocolate make this wine perfect for hearty, flavourful dishes. Think slow-cooked lamb with rosemary, aged beef steaks, or rich game meats that can match the wine's intensity. The spice and pepper notes also complement barbecued meats beautifully, making it an ideal choice for Australian outdoor dining.

While this 2023 Shiraz is drinking beautifully now with its rich fruit expression and integrated oak, the 'Killer Vintage' rating and complex structure suggest excellent cellaring potential. The combination of old vine concentration, quality oak maturation, and Barossa's proven aging ability means this wine could develop additional complexity over 5-8 years. The tannin structure and acidity will allow the secondary flavours of leather, earth, and dried fruits to emerge with time.

Section 3146 likely refers to the specific vineyard block or cadastral designation where these grapes were grown, indicating this is a single-vineyard wine from a precisely defined site. This level of specificity demonstrates Z Wines' commitment to showcasing terroir-driven expressions rather than blended regional wines. Single-vineyard designations allow winemakers to highlight the unique characteristics of particular soil types, microclimates, and vine ages within their property.
