Coonawarra Cabernet with some age behind it is one of Australian wine's great pleasures. And this one is sitting in exactly the right place. Drink it over the next two to three years for maximum pleasure. Which gives you absolutely no excuse not to open one tonight and put the rest away.

Why do we love this wine?

Deep midnight black in the glass with a dark red hue that signals serious concentration before you've even got it to your lips. Intense blackcurrant, choc-mint and a lifted earthiness on the nose - the unmistakable fingerprint of Coonawarra doing what Coonawarra does better than anywhere else. Vanillin cedar, tobacco and a whisper of leather add a complexity that only time in bottle can build. The palate is medium to full-bodied and generously fruited - blackcurrant and mint flooding through ripe, velvety tannins with tobacco, earth and bay leaf characters underneath adding layers that keep every sip more interesting than the last. There's a quiet confidence to this wine, powering through to a long, elegant finish with tertiary complexity just beginning to emerge and hint at where it's been and where it's still going.

Frequently Asked Questions

Coonawarra's famous terra rossa soil over limestone creates ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon, producing wines with distinctive eucalyptus and mint characters alongside intense blackcurrant fruit. The cool climate allows for slow ripening, developing complex tannin structures and the signature earthiness that makes Coonawarra Cabernet among Australia's most celebrated regional expressions. This 2013 Zema Estate perfectly showcases these regional hallmarks with its choc-mint aromatics and underlying earth and tobacco complexity.

At over a decade old, this wine is entering its prime drinking window with tertiary complexity beginning to emerge, as evidenced by the developing leather and tobacco notes. Premium Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon from quality producers like Zema Estate can age gracefully for 15-20 years or more, with the wine's velvety tannins and balanced structure suggesting it has many years of evolution ahead. The 95-point Halliday rating indicates exceptional quality that will reward patient cellaring.

The wine's rich blackcurrant fruit, cedar notes, and velvety tannins make it perfect for red meat dishes, particularly grilled lamb with rosemary or aged beef steaks. The emerging tobacco and leather characters complement game meats beautifully, while the underlying earthiness pairs wonderfully with mushroom-based dishes or aged hard cheeses. The wine's full body and structured tannins can stand up to bold flavours and rich sauces.

James Halliday's 95-point score places this wine in the 'outstanding' category, indicating exceptional quality and complexity that sets it apart from typical Cabernet Sauvignon. Halliday ratings above 94 points are reserved for wines showing remarkable regional character, perfect balance, and significant ageing potential. This score suggests the wine represents outstanding value and showcases Zema Estate's winemaking expertise at its finest.

Yes, decanting will significantly enhance your experience with this mature Cabernet Sauvignon. After a decade in bottle, decanting for 1-2 hours will help integrate the complex aromatics of blackcurrant, cedar, and tobacco while softening the tannins further. The wine's deep concentration and full-bodied structure will benefit from aeration, allowing the tertiary characters to fully express themselves and revealing the layers of complexity that have developed over time.
