Why do we love this wine?

Bernard Lonclas says “making champagne is more than just a trade, it’s a vocation - a calling, even”. We’re glad he’s decided making champagne is his calling, we didn’t know what we were missing until we got this in our glass. This is very much a grower champagne- as rumour would have it Bernard is out hand picking the grapes at the winery just south of Reims during vintage. As Jancis Robinson said, this is not for ‘neophytes’ (for those of you who have to look that word up, so did we). Which just goes to say, this will really excite the nerds and connoisseurs at the party. It’s hard not to appreciate the beauty in the subtle nuances, the bright and lifted body, the creamy texture, and the refreshing finish. With just 5g/L dosage, this will find its groove with the starting nibbles at your next celebration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Bernard Lonclas is a grower-producer who hand-picks his own grapes from vineyards just south of Reims, rather than purchasing fruit from other growers like many large champagne houses. This hands-on approach allows for complete control over quality from vine to bottle, resulting in a more personal expression of terroir. Grower champagnes often showcase unique character and craftsmanship that reflects the individual producer's vision rather than a corporate house style.

At just 5g/L dosage, this is classified as Extra Brut, meaning very little sugar has been added after disgorgement. This minimal dosage allows the pure expression of the Chardonnay fruit and the wine's natural acidity to shine through without masking. The low sugar content also makes it an excellent aperitif wine that won't overwhelm delicate canapés and starting nibbles at celebrations.

Blanc de Blancs means 'white from whites' - this champagne is made exclusively from white grapes, specifically Chardonnay. This creates a more elegant, mineral-driven style compared to champagnes that blend in red grapes like Pinot Noir. The result is the bright, lifted body and creamy texture described, with characteristic citrus notes like lemon zest and green apple, plus the brioche complexity that develops from extended lees ageing.

Robinson was indicating this champagne requires a developed palate to fully appreciate its subtle complexities and nuanced character. Rather than being an immediately accessible, fruit-forward style, this wine rewards those who can recognise the intricate interplay of minerality, texture, and refined bubbles. It's the kind of champagne that reveals new layers with each sip, making it particularly exciting for wine enthusiasts and connoisseurs.

Serve well-chilled at 6-8°C in proper champagne flutes to preserve the fine mousse and concentrate the aromatics. Given its sophisticated, full-bodied character and low dosage, it pairs beautifully with oysters, caviar, or aged cheeses as an aperitif. The creamy texture and bright acidity also make it excellent with lighter seafood dishes or simply enjoyed on its own to appreciate the craftsmanship Bernard Lonclas has put into every bottle.
