Why do we love this wine?

Bernard Lonclas says “making champagne is more than just a trade, it’s a vocation - a calling, even”. We’re glad he’s decided making champagne is his calling, we didn’t know what we were missing until we got this in our glass. This is very much a grower champagne- as rumour would have, it Bernard is out hand picking the grapes at the winery just south of Reims during vintage. As Jancis Robinson said, this is not for ‘neophytes’ (for those of you who have to look that word up, so did we). Which just goes to say, this will really excite the nerds and connoisseurs at the party. It’s hard not to appreciate the beauty in the subtle nuances, the bright and lifted body, the creamy texture, and the refreshing finish. With just 5g/L dosage, this will find its groove with the starting nibbles at your next celebration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Bernard Lonclas is a grower-producer who hand-picks his own grapes at his estate south of Reims, meaning he controls the entire process from vineyard to bottle. This approach typically results in more distinctive, terroir-driven champagnes compared to large houses that purchase grapes from multiple sources. Grower champagnes often showcase the unique character of a specific vineyard site and the winemaker's personal style, making them prized by wine enthusiasts seeking authentic expressions of Champagne.

The minimal 5g/L dosage (residual sugar) classifies this as an extra brut style, allowing the pure expression of the Chardonnay fruit and terroir to shine through without masking sweetness. This bone-dry approach requires exceptional base wine quality, as there's nowhere to hide any flaws. The low dosage also makes it an ideal aperitif wine that won't overwhelm delicate canapés and starting nibbles, while appealing to modern palates that favour crisp, clean styles.

Blanc de blancs means 'white from whites' - this champagne is made exclusively from Chardonnay grapes rather than the traditional blend that includes Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. This creates a more elegant, mineral-driven style with bright acidity and citrus notes like the lemon zest character found here. Chardonnay-only champagnes tend to be more delicate and age beautifully, developing complex brioche and nutty flavours over time while maintaining their signature finesse.

Serve well-chilled at 6-8°C in proper champagne flutes to preserve the fine mousse and concentrate the aromatics. The creamy texture and bright, lifted body make it perfect as an aperitif, but its full-bodied nature and complex brioche notes also pair beautifully with oysters, soft cheeses, or light seafood dishes. Given its sophisticated profile that Jancis Robinson noted appeals to experienced palates, take time to appreciate the subtle nuances as it warms slightly in the glass.

The consistent 90-point scores from both Vivino users and James Suckling indicate this is a seriously high-quality champagne that delivers exceptional value. James Suckling's 'Outstanding' rating is particularly significant as he's one of the world's most respected wine critics, especially for champagne. These ratings suggest the wine offers complexity and finesse typically found in much more expensive bottles, making it an excellent choice for those seeking premium champagne without the prestige house price tag.
