Why do we love this wine?

Welcome to the party, Bernard Lonclas! Our grower-producer friends have supplied us with some of the best bubbles in the business for a few vintages, so we can say with confidence (and lots of experience) that what they do is nothing short of outstanding. The 2014 ‘millésime’ vintage is a seriously great Champagne, too. Despite the understated, humble label, this is all about what’s in the glass. There are meyer lemons and grapefruit pith flavours that speak to an 80% dominance of chardonnay. Mouthfillingly fine bubbles interplay with lees, toastiness and a gorgeous saline slipperiness that flirts with superb nervous tension. Are you looking for a reason to drink one of the finest Champagne producers? Here’s a tip - you don’t need one. Just go for it.

Flint and stone aromas with some dried apple and smoke follow through to a full body with intense fruit and beautiful length. Steely and racy. 80% chardonnay and 20% pinot meunier. Will age beautifully. Drink or hold.

Frequently Asked Questions

Vintage Champagne like this 2014 millésime represents the character of a single exceptional year, rather than a blend across multiple years. The 2014 vintage in Champagne was particularly noteworthy for producing wines with excellent acidity and ageing potential. This allows the wine to develop more complex flavours and textures over time, evident in the toasty lees character and saline minerality that has evolved since bottling.

As a grower-producer, Bernard Lonclas owns their vineyards and makes wine exclusively from their own grapes, unlike the large Champagne houses that often purchase fruit from multiple growers. This approach allows for greater control over quality and terroir expression, resulting in more distinctive and authentic Champagne. The understated labelling reflects the focus on substance over marketing, which is typical of these artisanal producers who let their wine speak for itself.

The Chardonnay dominance gives this Champagne its elegant citrus profile and mineral backbone, particularly the meyer lemon and grapefruit pith flavours mentioned. Chardonnay brings finesse, acidity, and ageing potential to Champagne, while the remaining 20% (likely Pinot Noir or Pinot Meunier) adds body and complexity. This blend creates the perfect balance between the wine's nervous tension and its medium-bodied mouthfeel.

The wine's citrus notes and saline minerality make it exceptional with fresh oysters, sashimi, or crudo dishes. The toasty lees character and medium body also complement richer preparations like lobster thermidor or aged cheeses. The fine bubbles and nervous tension cut through creamy sauces beautifully, while the complexity stands up to dishes with umami depth like mushroom risotto or truffle preparations.

Serve well-chilled at 6-8°C in proper Champagne flutes to preserve the fine mousse and concentrate the aromatics. Store bottles horizontally in a cool, dark place away from vibration - this 2014 vintage has excellent ageing potential and will continue developing complexity for several more years. Once opened, use a proper Champagne stopper and consume within 2-3 days to maintain the wine's effervescence and delicate flavour balance.
