Why do we love this wine?

When it comes to premium chardy, complexity is king. This plays all the shots; tropical melon fruits, grapefruit and mouthwatering citrus, and toasty, buttery, nutty breadth on the palate. Spice box and vanilla mark the quality oak, and the acid persists through the enduring finish. If you're looking for the quintessential NZ chardy, then this is your eureka moment, Mofo.

Wonderfully styled and immensely complex, the bouquet shows white flesh nectarine, Gala apple, lemon pith, vanilla and hazelnut characters with nuances of oatmeal and brioche. The palate displays outstanding centration and intensity, while remaining elegant and poised, leading to an impressively long engaging finish. At its best: now to 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Auntsfield represents the premium end of Marlborough Chardonnay, showcasing old vine fruit and single vineyard expression that's quite rare in the region. While Marlborough is famous for Sauvignon Blanc, producers like Auntsfield are proving the region's exceptional potential for complex, oak-aged Chardonnay. The handpicked fruit and careful oak integration create a wine that rivals premium Burgundian styles while maintaining distinctive New Zealand character.

The 2019 vintage in Marlborough was exceptional for white wines, producing concentrated fruit with excellent natural acidity. This Chardonnay is now at its peak drinking window, where the oak has fully integrated and the wine shows perfect balance between fruit and secondary characters. Premium Chardonnays like this typically drink beautifully for 5-7 years from vintage, so 2019 offers that sweet spot of maturity without losing freshness.

The rich, buttery texture and oak influence make this perfect for creamy seafood dishes like lobster thermidor or pan-seared scallops with cauliflower puree. The wine's citrus backbone cuts through rich sauces beautifully, while the vanilla and spice notes complement roasted chicken or pork with herbs. The full body also stands up to soft cheeses like brie or camembert, creating classic flavour harmonies.

The 96-point Wine Orbit score reflects exceptional winemaking technique and outstanding fruit quality from old vines. Single vineyard Chardonnays from established sites like Cob Cottage develop unique terroir expression that critics recognise as benchmark quality. The complexity described - from tropical fruits to toasty oak integration - demonstrates the level of craftsmanship that separates premium wines from everyday bottles.

Old vines typically produce smaller yields of more concentrated fruit, leading to wines with greater depth and complexity. In New Zealand's relatively young wine industry, vines planted in the 1980s and 1990s are now considered 'old' and are producing their best fruit. These mature root systems access deeper soil layers and create more stable growing conditions, resulting in the intense flavours and balanced structure evident in this Auntsfield Chardonnay.
