Expect intense, complex aromas of fig, almond, peach and vanilla followed by more peach and some citrus on the palate with a creamy mouthfeel. This is vibrant, driving stuff and easily supports the oak in which it was matured.

Why do we love this wine?

Those in the know (and with discerning palates), know that Marlborough has much more to offer than its famous sauv blanc. All that sun that ripens sauv does wonders for chardonnay in the region and the result is ripper wines. In this example, you get intense, complex aromas of fig, almond, peach and vanilla followed by more peach and some citrus on the palate with a creamy mouthfeel. This is vibrant, driving stuff and easily supports the oak in which it was matured.

Frequently Asked Questions

Marlborough's reputation was built on Sauvignon Blanc, but the same sunny conditions that make exceptional Sauvignon also create ideal ripening conditions for Chardonnay. This Auntsfield demonstrates how the region's terroir translates beautifully to Chardonnay, producing wines with remarkable intensity and complexity that rival more famous Chardonnay regions. The warm days and cool nights preserve acidity while developing rich fruit flavours.

Single vineyard wines come from grapes grown in one specific site, allowing the unique characteristics of that particular plot to shine through. This approach gives winemakers complete control over vineyard management and harvest timing, resulting in wines that express a distinct sense of place. Auntsfield's single vineyard designation ensures this Chardonnay reflects the specific terroir and microclimate of their chosen site.

The oak maturation adds layers of vanilla and almond notes while contributing to the wine's creamy mouthfeel and textural complexity. Rather than overwhelming the fruit, the oak integration is balanced, supporting the natural peach and citrus flavours. This technique also helps develop the wine's medium body and gives it the structure to age gracefully while maintaining its vibrant, driving character.

The wine's medium body and creamy texture make it perfect for roasted chicken, lobster with butter sauce, or creamy pasta dishes. The citrus acidity cuts through rich foods while the oak-influenced vanilla notes complement dishes with similar flavour profiles. Try it with pan-seared scallops or a classic chicken and leek pie to highlight both the wine's fruit intensity and textural complexity.

This Chardonnay is drinking beautifully now, showing excellent integration between fruit, oak, and acidity. The 95-point rating from Sam Kim suggests it's at a wonderful drinking window where all elements are harmoniously balanced. While quality Chardonnays can develop further complexity with short-term cellaring, this wine's vibrant character and textural appeal make it highly enjoyable for immediate consumption.
