Why do we love this wine?

From the same single vineyard that the Sangreal pinot is sourced from comes a chardonnay grown on rich limestone and producing a wine that has the trademark power, length and minerality that the Farr wines are known for. Rich in flavour, yet refined, Nick Farr's education and winemaking experience is on full display here with a gorgeous wine that is complemented with 30% new oak, adding to a wine that is bursting with fruit expression. An absolute joy to drink now yet a wine with all the components to age gracefully and truly shine with some years under its belt. Truly a contender for one of Australia's greatest whites.

Frequently Asked Questions

Geelong's cool maritime climate and limestone-rich soils create perfect conditions for elegant Chardonnay. The region's proximity to Port Phillip Bay moderates temperatures, allowing for slow ripening that develops complex flavours whilst retaining natural acidity. This limestone terroir, evident in By Farr's vineyard, imparts the distinctive minerality that elevates Geelong Chardonnays above many other Australian regions.

The careful use of 30% new oak adds structural complexity without overwhelming the fruit expression. New oak contributes vanilla, spice, and subtle toasty notes whilst providing tannins that give the wine its full-bodied weight and aging potential. This restrained approach allows the limestone minerality and citrus fruit flavours to remain prominent, creating a harmonious balance between fruit purity and oak sophistication.

By Farr's reputation stems from their single-vineyard approach and Nick Farr's meticulous winemaking philosophy inherited from his father Gary Farr. The combination of exceptional terroir, low-yielding vines, and precise oak handling creates wines with remarkable depth and aging potential. Their consistent Five Red Star Halliday rating and 4.3 Vivino score across vintages demonstrates the producer's ability to craft world-class Chardonnay year after year.

The wine's rich texture and oaky complexity make it perfect for creamy seafood dishes like lobster thermidor or pan-seared scallops. The grapefruit and lemon zest notes beautifully complement roasted chicken with herbs, whilst the full body can stand up to richer preparations like duck confit or mushroom risotto. The minerality also pairs excellently with aged hard cheeses and dishes featuring truffle or other earthy elements.

This Chardonnay has excellent aging potential due to its natural acidity, mineral backbone, and quality oak integration. Over the next 5-8 years, the citrus notes will evolve into more complex honeyed and nutty flavours, whilst the oak will integrate further, adding layers of complexity. The limestone minerality will become more pronounced with time, and the wine will develop the creamy, textural richness that distinguishes truly great aged Chardonnay.
