This release is everything we want in a modern Yarra Chardonnay. Pale straw with a faint green flicker in the glass, it opens with aromas of lemon pith, nectarine and white florals, laced with nougat and a whisper of oak spice. The palate is pure elegance — layered stone fruit, citrus zest and minerally, chalky notes driving long across the finish. French oak plays a subtle supporting role, adding texture and polish without ever stealing the show.

Why do we love this wine?

Coldstream Hills has been shaping the story of Yarra Valley Chardonnay since 1985, building a reputation for wines defined by finesse, length and a quiet confidence that comes from getting the balance just right. Sourced from both the Upper and Lower Yarra, this. stunner captures the best of both worlds: citrus and slate from the high-altitude blocks, plush white peach and quince from the valley floor. Fermented and matured on lees in French oak barriques, puncheons and vats, it’s a wine that delivers texture, length and complexity at a level that’s frankly ridiculous for the price. Whether you’re chasing a crisp aperitif or the perfect partner for roast chicken, this Chardonnay nails the brief. A genuine Yarra Valley classic.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Chardonnay showcases the unique terroir diversity of the Yarra Valley by blending fruit from both upper and lower elevations. The high-altitude blocks contribute mineral-driven citrus and slate characteristics, while the warmer valley floor adds richness with white peach and quince flavours. This dual-sourcing approach creates exceptional complexity and balance that represents the full spectrum of what the Yarra Valley can offer in a single bottle.

The combination of French oak barriques, puncheons, and vats during fermentation and lees maturation creates layers of texture without overwhelming the fruit character. Lees contact adds creamy mouthfeel and subtle complexity, while the varied oak formats contribute different levels of integration - from the tighter grain of barriques to the gentler influence of larger vats. This multi-vessel approach allows the winemaker to craft a wine with both immediate appeal and long-term ageing potential.

The medium-bodied profile and balanced oak treatment make this incredibly food-friendly, particularly with dishes that have both richness and acidity. Roast chicken with herbs, pan-seared fish with butter sauce, or creamy pasta dishes will complement the wine's texture and fruit character. The citrus backbone also makes it excellent with fresh seafood, while the stone fruit flavours pair beautifully with dishes featuring almonds or hazelnuts.

While delicious now with its fresh fruit expression and integrated oak, this Chardonnay has the structure and complexity to develop beautifully over 3-5 years. The lees maturation and quality French oak provide the foundation for graceful ageing, where the citrus notes will evolve into more honeyed characteristics and the stone fruit will gain depth. However, its current balance makes it equally rewarding for immediate consumption.

Since 1985, Coldstream Hills has been a pioneer in defining the Yarra Valley Chardonnay style, establishing benchmarks for finesse and balance that other producers follow. Their decades of experience with the region's microclimates and vineyard sites means they understand exactly when and where to source fruit for optimal expression. This institutional knowledge, combined with their established relationships with premium vineyard sites, allows them to consistently deliver wines that punch well above their price point.
