Why do we love this wine?

This producer has been growing grapes in Chablis for generations, but it wasn’t until 1979 that they started bottling their own wine. There’s Chablis, and then there are wines that remind you why this French region has gained such huge international fame. Small production is a hallmark of producers here (or rather, a requirement), but this house is all about small-volume, precisely made wines. Their Chablis appellation wine is made with minimal fuss - only 20% of the wine sees oak, so fruit purity is at the fore. Fresh, crunchy, and vibrant are words that come to mind. The well-balanced palate is full of yellow nectarines, grapefruit pith and melon. A touch of spice certainly makes things nice, but there’s plenty to love in every perfect element here.

Frequently Asked Questions

Chablis represents Chardonnay in its purest form, shaped by Burgundy's unique Kimmeridgian soil rich in fossilised oyster shells. This producer uses minimal oak (only 20%) compared to many New World Chardonnays, allowing the grape's natural minerality and crisp acidity to shine through. The result is a wine that showcases terroir over winemaking technique, with that distinctive chalky, mineral backbone that makes Chablis instantly recognisable.

For generations, many Burgundian families sold their grapes to négociants or cooperatives rather than bottling wine themselves due to the significant investment required in winemaking equipment and marketing. The shift to estate bottling in the 1970s represented a movement towards greater quality control and profit margins. This transition allowed small producers like Domaine Roland Lavantureux to express their unique terroir and winemaking philosophy, rather than having their grapes blended into larger commercial cuvées.

The wine's mineral backbone and citrus notes make it a classic match for oysters and shellfish, honouring Chablis' maritime geological origins. The nectarine and melon flavours complement lighter fish dishes, while the subtle spice and texture can handle creamy sauces without being overwhelmed. Try it with goat's cheese, roasted chicken, or even sushi - the wine's balanced acidity cuts through richness while its fruit character won't compete with delicate flavours.

The 2022 vintage in Burgundy was marked by early budbreak followed by spring frosts, then a hot, dry summer that concentrated flavours while maintaining good acidity. This challenging year often produces wines with excellent balance and longevity, as the vines' stress response intensifies mineral expression. The vintage's natural concentration likely contributes to this wine's vibrant fruit character and textural complexity, creating a Chablis that's both immediately appealing and built for cellaring.

Small production in Chablis typically means hand-harvesting, plot-by-plot vinification, and meticulous attention to detail that's impossible with large volumes. These boutique producers often own prime vineyard sites passed down through generations, allowing them to express specific terroir characteristics. Limited quantities also mean winemakers can afford to be selective, using only the best grapes and employing traditional techniques that prioritise quality over efficiency, resulting in wines that truly capture the essence of their specific corner of Chablis.
