Why do we love this wine?

The Clayvin vineyard is considered one of New Zealand’s most decorated single vineyards. High-density vine plantings, from over 30 years ago - now certified organic. Everything here is done with meticulous care, attention and love. From taking the chardonnay and hand picking to basket pressing, and fermenting in new oak using the most expensive, high-quality French barrels or, as the label indicates ‘barrique’. Tell you what, this is one ‘blingy’ chardy.

The 2016 ‘barrique’ is exclusive to the ‘fo, so you can only find it here. The mouth-filling richness of this wine is utterly sensational. A rich, weighty, textural and full-bodied style that has the wine geeks at Mofo HQ swooning. While showing off its oaky side, the flavours work in perfect harmony. Peach, lemon curd, brioche and grapefruit, with honey and ginger spice. Wow. If rich chardy is your thing, then our advice is to snatch up some of this, now.

It's gloriously expressed on the nose showing ripe nectarine, flint, cedar, lemon and oatmeal nuances, leading to a richly textured palate that's weighty and expansive. Superbly layered with engaging flavours with a mesmerising finish. At its best: now to 2028.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Clayvin vineyard is recognised as one of New Zealand's most decorated single vineyards, featuring high-density plantings established over 30 years ago that are now certified organic. This combination of mature vines, sustainable farming practices, and meticulous vineyard management creates ideal conditions for premium Chardonnay production. The vineyard's reputation stems from consistently producing fruit that expresses both the terroir and the careful attention to detail that goes into every aspect of cultivation.

The wine's impressive weight and texture come from traditional winemaking techniques including hand-picking, basket pressing, and fermentation in new French oak barriques. These expensive, high-quality barrels contribute vanilla and spice notes while allowing controlled oxidation that builds the wine's creamy mouthfeel. The combination of premium fruit from old vines and careful oak integration creates the mouth-filling richness that defines this style of Chardonnay.

The wine showcases a harmonious blend of fruit, oak, and secondary flavours that complement rather than compete with each other. Primary fruit notes of peach and grapefruit provide freshness, while the oak fermentation contributes brioche and vanilla characteristics. The lemon curd and honey elements bridge these components, with ginger spice adding complexity and preventing the richness from becoming overwhelming.

The 97 points from Wine Orbit and 5-star rating from Sam Kim reflect exceptional quality that places this wine among New Zealand's finest Chardonnays. These scores indicate the wine demonstrates outstanding balance, complexity, and expression of both variety and place. Such high ratings from respected critics suggest the wine will age gracefully and represents excellent value for collectors seeking premium New Zealand Chardonnay.

Marlborough's cool climate and long growing season allow Chardonnay grapes to develop intense flavours while retaining natural acidity, which is crucial for balancing the wine's rich, oak-influenced style. The region's diurnal temperature variation helps preserve the fresh fruit characteristics that prevent the wine from becoming overly heavy despite its full-bodied nature. This climate creates the perfect foundation for the complex interplay between fruit intensity and oak integration that defines premium Marlborough Chardonnay.
