Kaffir lime and lemon lead through the bouquet with subtle honey and florals inviting you into the moreish palate - which kicks off the ground bringing the mouth-puckering freshness and crunch of crisp green apple, providing both power and finesse through to a long and satisfying finish. Sensational now, but perfectly shaped for the cellar.

Why do we love this wine?

From a 9/10 “landmark” Clare Valley vintage comes a pure, yet complex drop. Founder Jeffrey Grosset leads in Australian riesling making, consistently producing outstanding drops that are virtually unchallenged both here and abroad. This paired with A-grade certified organic/biodynamic vineyards, and a tiny team of just 8, permits Grosset to retain character and individuality across their world-class range. With 8g of residual sugar per litre, the Alea harmoniously blends sweetness and acidity. It’s no wonder their wines score so highly year on year!

"Alea Vineyard, a distinct site for Grosset set on red loam over hard-red rock, was planted in 2000. Certified organic and biodynamic. Produced in an off-dry style. A moreish riesling with pitch-perfect sweetness and acidity, mouth-watering and fresh in its feel. Scents of green apple, kaffir lime leaf and lemon lozenges. Flavours combine with the crunch and sweetness of green apple with a good squeeze of tangy lime juice. Gentle fruit sweetness is abetted by cool, briny, lemony acidity and general air of freshness. Ultra appealing and yet with a sense of detail and minerally complexity. An outstanding release which should develop with interest with cellar time. 95 Points." - Mike Bennie, Halliday Wine Companion

Frequently Asked Questions

The Alea contains 8 grams of residual sugar per litre, placing it in the off-dry category that bridges dry and sweet styles. This careful balance allows the natural acidity of Clare Valley Riesling to harmonise with gentle sweetness, creating a more approachable wine that enhances the citrus and floral characteristics. The residual sugar also provides excellent ageing potential, as it acts as a natural preservative while developing complex honeyed notes over time.

Clare Valley's unique terroir combines warm days with cool nights, creating perfect conditions for Riesling's signature acidity and aromatic intensity. The region's ancient soils and elevation preserve the grape's natural freshness while allowing full flavour development. Jeffrey Grosset has been instrumental in establishing Clare Valley as Australia's premier Riesling region, with his organic and biodynamic practices further enhancing the pure expression of this distinctive landscape.

Grosset's certified organic and biodynamic vineyard management creates wines with greater complexity and authentic terroir expression. These practices eliminate synthetic chemicals, encouraging natural soil biology that produces grapes with more concentrated flavours and better mineral expression. The biodynamic approach, treating the vineyard as a living ecosystem, results in wines that truly reflect their Clare Valley origins with enhanced purity and distinctive character.

The off-dry profile and bright acidity make this Riesling exceptionally versatile with food. It excels with spicy Asian cuisines where the residual sugar balances heat, while the acidity cuts through rich dishes like pork belly or duck. The grapefruit and lime notes complement seafood beautifully, particularly shellfish and white fish with citrus-based sauces, while the jasmine aromatics pair wonderfully with aromatic herbs and light cheeses.

Clare Valley Rieslings are renowned for their exceptional ageing potential, often improving for 10-15 years or more. The 2022's residual sugar and natural acidity provide the perfect foundation for long-term development, gradually evolving from primary citrus and floral notes to complex honey, toast, and petrol characteristics. Grosset's meticulous winemaking ensures this wine will reward patient cellaring, developing the classic aged Riesling profile that has made Australian examples world-famous.
