WOW, what a wine. Riotously full-flavoured, it’s then whisked away by a flash of bright acidity that leaves you longing for more, while the embers of the intensely citrus, peach and pineapple-driven palate sizzle on the palate long after.

Why do we love this wine?

This is a cheat day riesling if ever there was one. The layered complexities are seemingly neverending, as you’d expect of a riesling from a Grand Cru site, and the unique character of the terroir is screamingly obvious. One you could hold onto for decades, but that’s no less entrancing right now. Is there an Alsace fan club? Because you can sign us up. We’ve definitely got Julien and Sophie to blame for the obsession, but we’re not complaining.

Frequently Asked Questions

Schoenenbourg is one of Alsace's most prestigious Grand Cru sites, renowned for its unique gypsum-rich soils that impart distinctive mineral complexity to Riesling. The vineyard's steep slopes and optimal sun exposure create ideal conditions for slow ripening, allowing the grapes to develop intense aromatics while retaining crisp acidity. This terroir produces Rieslings with exceptional ageing potential and a signature slate-driven minerality that's immediately recognisable.

Grand Cru Alsace Rieslings from top sites like Schoenenbourg are legendary for their longevity, often improving for 15-20 years or more. The 2022's natural acidity and mineral backbone provide the structural foundation for extended ageing, during which the wine will develop honeyed complexity and deeper petrol notes characteristic of mature Riesling. While drinking beautifully now, this wine will reward patient collectors with increased depth and tertiary flavours over the next two decades.

The wine's slate minerality and white peach notes make it exceptional with seafood, particularly oysters, crab, or pan-fried fish with herb butter. Its crisp acidity cuts through rich dishes like foie gras or creamy cheeses, while the mineral backbone complements Asian cuisine, especially Thai or Vietnamese dishes with citrus and herbs. The wine's complexity also pairs beautifully with charcuterie and aged hard cheeses from Alsace.

Julien Schaal represents the new generation of Alsace winemakers who combine traditional techniques with modern precision to showcase terroir authentically. Working alongside Sophie, they've gained recognition for their meticulous vineyard management and ability to capture the unique character of each Grand Cru site. Their approach emphasises minimal intervention winemaking that allows the distinctive gypsum soils of Schoenenbourg to express themselves fully in the finished wine.

Despite being light-bodied, this Grand Cru Riesling delivers remarkable intensity and complexity through its mineral structure rather than weight. The term refers to the wine's elegant, ethereal mouthfeel that doesn't mask the intricate layers of flavour - from white peach fruit to slate minerality. This style is classic for premium Alsace Riesling, where finesse and precision trump power, allowing the terroir's unique characteristics to shine through without heavy extraction or oak influence.
