If you've ever sat near the water in northern Italy with a cold glass of white and thought this is it, this is the one - odds are it was a Soave. Not the most famous Italian white, not the most talked about, but arguably the most effortlessly drinkable. This is the wine the Veneto pours when it's hot and the seafood is fresh and nobody has time for anything complicated. Pure, fragrant, alive.

Why do we love this wine?
Le Battistelle's Montesei comes from old vines - we're talking 70 to 90 years old - grown on steep volcanic terraces in the heart of Soave Classico. That ancient, porous soil gives the wine a mineral edge that you can actually taste: bright citrus, white peach, delicate floral notes and the classic bitter almond finish that makes Soave so distinctively itself. No malolactic, four months on lees, and a freshness that hits the palate like a cold breeze off the Adriatic. This is the bottle for a warm evening, a plate of something from the sea, a generous pour of good olive oil over literally anything. It's also the bottle for anyone who thinks Italian white wine begins and ends with pinot grigio. It doesn't. Welcome to Soave 101.
