Why do we love this wine?

We know, Italian chardonnay might seem weird to some. We love chardy for being the chameleon grape- wherever it goes, it shines. In fact, it’s become such a success in Italy that it is now the 4th most planted white grape. This isn’t reinventing the wheel here, it’s just a well-made, familiar-in-style, and immensely delicious wine. It sees 40% new oak with periodic lees stirring in barrel to build texture and complexity. You’ll find pineapple and tropical fruit, along with hints of chamomile and vanilla, all carried by balanced acidity in an elegant and fresh wine. It’s stylish and Italian, two words which are as synonymous as chardonnay and happiness.

Frequently Asked Questions

Chardonnay has become Italy's fourth most planted white grape because Italian winemakers have mastered the art of expressing terroir through this adaptable variety. The cooler climate regions like Piedmont offer ideal conditions for producing elegant, balanced Chardonnays that rival those from traditional regions. Italian producers bring their own stylistic approach, often emphasising freshness and food-friendliness while still achieving the complexity that makes Chardonnay so beloved worldwide.

The 40% new oak treatment strikes an ideal balance between adding complexity without overwhelming the fruit character. New oak barrels contribute vanilla and spice notes while allowing oxygen exchange that softens tannins and builds texture. The periodic lees stirring during barrel aging creates a creamy mouthfeel and adds layers of flavour complexity. This technique, combined with the remaining 60% in neutral vessels, preserves the wine's fresh fruit expression while adding sophisticated depth.

Piedmont's continental climate with cool nights and warm days creates perfect conditions for Chardonnay to develop intense flavours while retaining crucial acidity. The region's limestone-rich soils contribute to the wine's mineral backbone and elegant structure. This climate allows for a longer growing season, enabling the grapes to achieve full phenolic ripeness while maintaining the balanced acidity that makes this wine both rich and refreshing.

The exceptional 98-point rating from Luca Maroni reflects the wine's perfect balance of power and elegance that defines great Chardonnay. Critics appreciate how La Bollina has achieved textural complexity through skilled oak management while preserving the variety's natural fruit expression. The wine demonstrates technical excellence in winemaking, with each element - fruit, oak, acidity, and texture - working harmoniously to create a complete and compelling wine experience.

This rich, oak-influenced Chardonnay pairs beautifully with creamy pasta dishes, roasted chicken, or grilled seafood where the wine's texture can complement rather than compete with the food. The tropical fruit notes make it excellent with Asian fusion cuisine, while the vanilla and oak elements work wonderfully with dishes featuring butter or cream sauces. The wine's balanced acidity cuts through rich foods while its full body stands up to robust flavours without being overwhelmed.
