Why do we love this wine?

Most people love fruit, wouldn’t you agree? Well, if that’s a fact, you’ll love this pinot gris. Loaded with fruits, there may even be a reason that the word ‘agree’ and ‘gris’ happen to rhyme. Fresh off the port of New Zealand, Middle Earth is one of our favourite wineries from the south island. We only ever get a limited amount (they don’t make so much wine, it’s pretty exclusive), and now is not the time to miss out. Refreshingly crisp and brimming with sweet luscious honey character, lemon, dragonfruit and quince, this is mouth-filling and textured, piercing the palate with firm acidity and minerality. This is perfect for the humid weather served super chilled; it just slips and slides. Destined to be consumed with your favourite hawker dishes, this wine will happily take the heat off your chilli crab or balance alongside the tamarind sweetness of rojak.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Nelson Pinot Gris showcases the rich, textured style that New Zealand's South Island is becoming famous for. Unlike lighter, more neutral expressions, it delivers mouth-filling weight with honey character and firm minerality. The combination of sweet luscious fruit with piercing acidity creates a complex wine that bridges the gap between Alsatian richness and New World freshness.

Middle Earth operates as a boutique producer with limited production volumes, making their wines genuinely scarce in the market. This scarcity isn't marketing hype - small-scale winemaking allows for meticulous attention to detail and hand-crafted quality that larger producers simply cannot achieve. Their 5-star Wine Orbit rating reflects this commitment to excellence over quantity.

The wine's firm acidity and medium body make it exceptional with spicy Asian cuisine, particularly dishes with complex sweet-heat profiles. The honey character and textured palate can stand up to rich hawker fare like chilli crab, while the citrus notes complement tamarind-based dishes beautifully. Its minerality also pairs wonderfully with fresh seafood and creamy pasta dishes.

Serve this wine well-chilled at 8-10°C to emphasise its refreshing qualities and crisp acidity. The cold temperature enhances the citrus and mineral notes while allowing the honey character to emerge gradually as it warms in the glass. Use a medium-sized white wine glass to concentrate the aromatics and showcase the wine's textural complexity.

Nelson's unique terroir combines maritime influence with diverse soil types, creating ideal conditions for aromatic white varieties like Pinot Gris. The region's long, dry summers and cool nights preserve natural acidity while developing intense fruit flavours. This climate produces wines with both power and elegance - evident in this wine's combination of rich texture and refreshing minerality.
