Why do we love this wine?

I can’t speak highly enough of chenin blanc - it’s always at the top of my favourites list. This is classic for Margs; pear drop, honeysuckle, and a hint of vanilla at the fore, then gaining complexity as it comes up to room temperature. Think quince, ripe pear, preserved lemon, and a little brioche. A precise, confident expression of Margaret River chenin.

Frequently Asked Questions

Chenin blanc is celebrated for its remarkable ability to express terroir while maintaining its distinctive character across different winemaking styles. This Moss Brothers example showcases the grape's natural acidity and fruit complexity, which allows it to develop beautifully as it warms in the glass. The variety's inherent balance between freshness and richness makes it perfect for both immediate enjoyment and short-term cellaring, while its food-friendly nature pairs well with everything from seafood to creamy cheeses.

Margaret River's Mediterranean climate with its warm days and cool nights creates perfect conditions for chenin blanc to develop complex flavours while retaining crucial acidity. The region's maritime influence helps preserve the grape's natural freshness, while the longer growing season allows for the development of those characteristic honeysuckle and pear notes found in this wine. This climate combination is why Margaret River chenin blanc often displays both immediate appeal and the structure for short-term ageing.

Start by serving this chenin blanc lightly chilled, around 8-10°C, to appreciate its initial fresh pear and honeysuckle notes. As the wine warms naturally in your glass, you'll discover the more complex layers of quince, preserved lemon, and brioche characters that develop at cellar temperature. This temperature evolution is part of the wine's charm, so don't rush to keep it ice-cold - let it tell its full flavour story as it warms.

A 94-point rating from Wine Orbit places this chenin blanc in the 'outstanding' category, indicating exceptional quality that stands well above typical examples. This score reflects the wine's precise winemaking, complex flavour development, and authentic expression of Margaret River terroir. Such high ratings for chenin blanc are particularly noteworthy, as the variety often flies under the radar compared to more fashionable whites, making this wine an excellent discovery for quality-conscious drinkers.

The wine's combination of fresh acidity and rich, honeyed notes makes it perfect for dishes that bridge fresh and creamy elements. Try it with pan-fried fish with butter sauce, roast chicken with herbs, or creamy pasta dishes with seafood. The vanilla and brioche notes also make it an excellent match for soft cheeses like brie or camembert, while the preserved lemon character pairs beautifully with Middle Eastern cuisine featuring citrus and herbs.
