Why do we love this wine?

Is there anything the Schaal’s can’t do? They’ve clearly mastered South African and Alsatian wine and here’s a bit more of that ‘proof is in the pudding’. Sophie’s Alsace riesling is a blend of fruit from two vineyards representing the major soil types in the region - granitic with mica and clayey limestone. The wine is laser sharp with an expression of fresh lime, lemon curd, green apple, slate and orange blossom. Refreshing, bracing and complete, the perfect example of the style.

Frequently Asked Questions

Alsace Rieslings like Sophie Schaal's are typically drier and more mineral-driven than their German counterparts, reflecting the region's unique continental climate and diverse soil types. This wine showcases the classic Alsatian style with its bone-dry profile and pronounced minerality from granitic and limestone soils. The result is a more food-friendly wine with crisp acidity and citrus precision rather than the sweeter, more floral character often found in German Rieslings.

The distinctive mineral character comes from the blend of two contrasting Alsatian soil types - granitic with mica and clayey limestone - which impart different textural elements to the wine. Granite contributes the slate-like minerality and precision, while limestone adds structure and helps retain the wine's natural acidity. Riesling's naturally high acidity amplifies these citrus flavours, creating that 'laser sharp' profile with fresh lime and lemon curd notes that make this style so refreshing.

This wine's crisp acidity and mineral backbone make it exceptional with seafood, particularly shellfish, grilled fish, or sushi where the citrus notes complement delicate flavours. The dry style also works beautifully with Alsatian cuisine like choucroute garnie or lighter pork dishes. Its aromatic profile and refreshing character make it perfect for Asian cuisine, especially dishes with ginger, lemongrass, or light spicing where the wine's precision won't be overwhelmed.

While this 2022 Riesling is absolutely delicious now with its vibrant fruit and crisp acidity, quality Alsace Rieslings have excellent ageing potential of 5-10 years. As it matures, the citrus notes will evolve into more complex honeyed and petrol characteristics typical of aged Riesling, while the mineral backbone will become more pronounced. The wine's certified organic production and careful vineyard selection suggest it has the structure to develop beautifully over time.

Certified organic viticulture means the grapes were grown without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or fertilisers, relying instead on natural soil health and biodiversity. This approach often results in more expressive terroir characteristics, which explains why you can taste the distinct granite and limestone influences so clearly in this wine. Organic farming typically produces grapes with more concentrated flavours and better natural balance, contributing to the wine's 'complete' character and authentic expression of Alsatian soil and climate.
