Why do we love this wine?

Is there anything the Schaal’s can’t do? They’ve clearly mastered South African and Alsatian wine and here’s a bit more of that ‘proof is in the pudding’. Sophie’s Alsace riesling is a blend of fruit from two vineyards representing the major soil types in the region - granitic with mica and clayey limestone. The wine is laser sharp with an expression of fresh lime, lemon curd, green apple, slate and orange blossom. Refreshing, bracing and complete, the perfect example of the style.

Frequently Asked Questions

Alsace Rieslings like Sophie Schaal's are typically drier and more mineral-driven than their German counterparts, reflecting the region's unique continental climate and diverse soils. This wine showcases the classic Alsatian style with its bone-dry profile and pronounced minerality from granitic and limestone soils. The result is a more food-friendly wine with crisp acidity and less residual sugar than most German Rieslings.

The distinctive mineral character comes from the blend of two key Alsatian soil types - granitic with mica and clayey limestone - which impart the slate-like minerality. Riesling naturally expresses terroir exceptionally well, translating these geological influences into flavours of lime, lemon curd and that characteristic 'wet stone' quality. The cool climate and organic farming practices further enhance these pure, focused citrus notes.

This wine's crisp acidity and mineral backbone make it perfect for seafood, particularly shellfish, sushi, or grilled fish with herbs. The citrus notes complement Asian cuisine beautifully, especially dishes with ginger, lemongrass, or light spicing. Its refreshing character also pairs wonderfully with fresh goat cheese, charcuterie, or simply enjoyed as an aperitif on warm days.

Organic viticulture allows the vineyard's natural terroir to shine through more clearly, which is evident in this wine's pure expression of Alsatian soil types. Without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers, the vines develop deeper root systems, accessing more complex mineral layers and creating more authentic flavour profiles. This results in the wine's laser-sharp focus and clean, unmasked expression of lime, apple, and slate characteristics.

This 2023 Riesling is drinking beautifully now, showcasing vibrant primary fruit flavours and that signature Alsatian freshness. However, quality Alsace Rieslings can develop fascinating complexity over 5-10 years, evolving honeyed notes and deeper mineral expressions while maintaining their essential elegance. For immediate enjoyment, serve well-chilled to highlight its refreshing, bracing character and bright citrus profile.
