Five aged wines for Father's Day
Whoever and wherever they are, they deserve to be celebrated with a great wine - and here’s five beauties we’ve fetched up from the cellar that we think will go down great.
Shiraz 2016 – Black Market Deal #44816
We’re up in the stratosphere now, amongst the upper echelon of Barossa shiraz - a 96-point Halliday scoring wine from a Five-Star rated winery. Hand-picked from a single block, basket pressed and set to barrel for 20 months. Deep and inky, yet expressing vivid dark berry fruits along with chocolate and licorice, and held together well by cedary and structural notes from the time in French oak. This is serious stuff, jumping boldly out of the glass at present, but built to age for decades. When you enjoy it is up to you, whether it’s for this Father’s Day or ten years down the line.
Carobbio Chianti Classico Reserva DOCG 2015
When it comes to Chianti, absolutely first and foremost, you’ve got to decide on food. It has all the elements that pair well with great dishes. Tartness, which you actually want to enhance flavour, and those savoury sour cherry and red fruit notes. We recently opened a bottle of this recently at an Italian restaurant with prosciutto, olive oil and pizza flying everywhere, and it just fit in really seamlessly.
Yes, it’s fresh, vibrant and lively but there’s also a little bit of depth there - this is, after all, the most classic sangiovese. A really good example of Chianti Classico, aged beautifully, and one of Tuscany’s gifts to the wine world.
Massimo Rattalino Trentaquattro34 Barolo DOCG 2013
Pepper, plum, truffles, astounding depth and body - we could go on about the merits of this wine for ages, but really Decanter said it best. They called it “Barolo at its best! A masterpiece.” and those words sit alongside a massive 97 point score, plus a platinum medal to boot. Aged nebbiolo ready to go now, but good for a few years yet too - don’t let this slip between your fingers, mofos.
Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 – Black Market Deal #45570
This black market beauty over-delivers in every way. Rarely do you open wine when it’s in the perfect drinking window - but we have one for you here. With almost a decade in the bottle, its tannins have softened to perfection. Robust and vibrant dark berries are still at the core, but the layers are opening up, offering roasted notes, cigar box, olive tapenade and mineral warmth. Cabernet sauvignon with perfectly aged, fine tannins is genuinely such a pleasure; it makes you wonder why we don’t always wait (nearly) ten years.

Aged Barossa shiraz: big, heavy, and bold. If there was ever a wine that almost overflows with grandeur, this is well and truly it. Something you can say about the wine and the package it comes in.
Are we in any doubt anymore that Barossa is the true home of shiraz? Seriously, search the world over and you'll be hard pressed to find juice quite as impressive, quite as complex, and with quite as much history. Each wine that comes out of this prized region is worth holding tightly on to, but this. This right here. This is the stuff mofo.
Genuinely deep and robust, this wine seems to have a never-ending palate of intrigue. Blackberry and liquorice dance with vanilla and a pantry full of baking spices. Do us a favour and savour every drop, it's worthy of the attention.
