The mofo guide to mencía

Mencia - the little grape from Spain that’s starting to make waves with mofos. Trust us, these wines aren’t to be missed. Let’s see what they do so well.

Why mofos like Mencía

So let's talk about mencía, a red grape variety that's mostly grown in and around the northwest region of Spain (though with a bit in Portugal too). It’s responsible for producing some mighty fine wines, and can give you a range of flavours and aromas depending on where it's grown and how it's made. It’s a treat for the taste buds, and definitely worth trying if you're into medium-bodied reds.

What to expect with a Mencía

When it comes to taste, mencía is always a welcome ride through flavour country. They usually have a medium to high acidity and moderate tannins, and in terms of fruits flavours and aromas it runs the gamut from red-to-black; think raspberry, blackberry, black cherry, and plum. And some Mencía wines may even give you hints of dried herbs and flowers (maybe with some vanilla from oak too) all adding to the complexity.

What temperature should I serve Mencía at?

Nothing complicated here - room temperature is great for Mencía, 15-19°C.

What foods pair with Mencía?

Mencía is a versatile little devil, so let's dive in.

First up, grilled meats. Mencía's got the acidity and tannins to handle big, bold flavours you get from steak, lamb, and pork. If you're grilling, you better be pouring some Mencía.

Moving on, mushrooms. Mencía's earthy and herbaceous notes make it a match made in heaven for mushroom-based dishes like risotto, pasta, or soups.

Now, cheese. Hard and aged cheeses like manchego and parmesan are perfect partners for Mencía's tannins. And let's not forget about gouda. Gouda and mencía, friends, it's a beautiful thing.

And last but not least, roasted veggies. The natural sweetness of roasted vegetables like beets, carrots, and brussels sprouts pairs perfectly with the fruit flavours of mencía.

So there you have it, folks. Mencía can handle the heat, the meat, the cheese, the mushrooms, and the veggies. It's a wine that can do it all.

Ps, when we say it's a versatile devil, try it with spiced dishes if that’s your thing. Mencía can take the heat, so bring on the chilli, curry, and all that other spicy goodness. This wine won't back down.

When should I be drinking Mencía?

See above with the food pairings - it’ll be happy to come along to most parties. Our favourite time to pour mencía? We’re glad you asked - with a couple of birra tacos on a Tuesday. Or anytime really, but particularly then.

Guessing if you’re still here you’re looking for the mencía. Here it is, you won't regret it.
